just another day in the Lemhi's

This is how our day began. Walking west from Gilmore Summit. Sheep Mountain is the snowy peak in the distance.

Turbo checking out some of the terrain in the Middle Bowl. Lot's of steep chutes and couloirs to ski when the snow conditions are safe!!

Your grin would be this big too!
Heather psyched for her first turns of the season on the north face of Sheep Mtn.

This is how our day ended. Looking down the Birch Creek Valley with Highway 28 in the far distance where the car is parked!
It was a great day with lots of exploration. I'd suggest that we covered nearly 12 miles of Lemhi terrain starting with sagebrush, followed by heavily forested canyons sprinkled with meadows and ending with some craggy alpine terrain above treeline. Was the skiing great? Well, it was definitely good! As good as touring around with our skis on watching the wind blow plums of snow from the ridge tops. As good as watching that snow light up like floating crystals as they passed in front of the sun. As good as laughing at one another for humorous face plants in the snow! As good as walking out of Long Canyon to the crest of the Moraine and seeing the Birch Creek Valley flow southward toward the Snake River Valley.
A great day with great people...

Expanding the Possibilities

Dean making turns

Heather, Dean and I headed out to Long Canyon to continue exploring it's ski possiblities. We are all becoming more excited with every visit!
Today we worked up into the "Middle" and "South" bowls, checking out the approaches and ski lines. We ended with a ski down the "apron" below a narrow little gully off the summit of Sheep Mt. Yes it all needs more snow but we still had a blast. We also covered a lot of ground, leaving us pleasantly worn-out after nearly 11.5 miles of hiking and skinning!

what did you learn in school today?

Okay, for real - did you ever learn about avalanches in the 4th grade? Or was your teacher so obsessed with skiing that she would dress up in her ski clothes while teaching the National Geographic Science lesson about avalanches?
Man, those kids are so lucky!

How cool was your 4th grade teacher??

Dreams.....

Dream interpretation is the process of assigning meaning to dreams. In ancient societies, dreaming was considered a supernatural communication or a means of divine intervention. The meaning of dreams could be unraveled by those with certain powers.

Now, in modern times, various schools of psychology have offered theories about the meaning of dreams. Freud argued that the foundation of all dream content is wish-fulfillment.

"For the dreaming wildebeest, it may be a rich pasture over the hill; for the human dreamer it may be splitting the atom." .....or thigh deep powder.

Last night I dreamed, get this, of dreaming about snowboarding. Whaaaaa......? I have dreams of snowboarding, now I am dreaming about dreaming about snowboarding? Man, am I seriously messed up or what?

Jung stressed that the dream was not merely a devious puzzle invented by the unconscious to be deciphered, so that the 'true' causal factors behind it may be elicited. He believed that dreams may contain ineluctable truths, philosophical pronouncements, illusions, wild fantasies, memories, plans, and irrational experiences.

I am going with the wild fantasies. 24 inches of powder all season long. I am sure that Freud would agree.

North Slopes of Sheep Mt in the Lemhis

Looking NW towards Gilmore Pk from northside of Sheep Mt

With a day off, clear skies and no one available to partner up with, I headed back to Long Canyon in the Lemhis with my trusted dog, Trigger to explore the wooded slopes on the north side of Sheep Mt. On the southern aspects in the Lemhis, the snow level is about 10,500' but on the northern sides it drops down around 8,ooo'. From about 8,600' upwards the snow is 20+" deep and is quite powdery; fine for making early season turns in the open trees.
I was also blessed with sightings of moose, mule deer and an ermine!
